Default Swan Critique

Winter is here, in the great white north, so outdoor shooting really takes a lot of creativity, as everything is so gray. I have taken lately to feeding the ducks, and swans at the marina outside our home.

Okay my question, that I am posing is, am I too close on this shot. I kind of like it, but is the aperture too large

Something about it sort of intriques me.

Whether or not to includ the neck in the depth of field is a personal choice, but I think I'd like it more that way.

Overall, the image is too dark and I think a horizontal crop to eliminate the dark water would be good.

Thanks for this Jim...I have not done any PP to the shot, but will take your advice and see what i come up with.
