Default Typical Man

**larger version**

Typical man, lounging about while the women make sure things are going smoothly

Camera: Nikon D60
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 270 mm
ISO Speed: 200

The critique I'm looking for here is mainly for composition. I could have gotten the lioness' back end in the shot, but there was a scrubby little bush she was behind that was very distracting. This is my first time shooting wildlife, so any advice on what I could or should have done differently would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to give any advice without taking a look at the original full frame.
Anyway about this one I'd just say there's too much space above those lions, don't know why but I keep staring at those yellow grass behind them. Maybe it's just me.

Well, if you want a man's opinion (), I think a tighter crop would help, so that the black areas in the corners would go away and so we'd get a closer look at the heads.

Otherwise, I don't know. Would it have been possible to try the shot from a higher position? Or maybe a bit more from the right, with a bit tighter zoom?

I like you photo. Good light and details.

This critique thing is tough. Gotta go take a nap.

I think the composition is good...I actually think a little looser might have been better, and maybe shifted left a little (looser but keep rt edge about where it is).
The space around the lions gives a feeling of being "on the tundra". Having a little more space for her to "look into" might be a little better. You could have tried more space in the forground, but I don't know that would help/hurt...

I think your shot is just great. The lioness gazing off towards the direction of the sun keeps its face bright and everything behind it dark from its shadow keeping your eyes fixed on the lioness's face. Bravo! If you had an even farther focal length I would suggest you zoom in to the lioness's face keeping it big to the right, sort of like a profile picture from the side. Another thing you can do is crop the photo so that it's a panorama keeping only the tip of the lioness's ear and its chin in the pic and cropping everything above and below it (not to the left or right). That way you would emphasize on the lioness's beautiful face.
