I would advise zooming out a bit and cropping afterwards. As a discipline, restrict your crops to the same ratio used by your camera. For example, mine takes pictures that are about 3:2 (eg. 3008x2000px at full size) so I would limit myself to crops that have the same ratio (eg. 1500x1000px).

The value in doing that is that you will get a better idea of what fits within a frame of that proportion and, as it becomes ingrained, you can return to framing the subject more closely in camera.
