Need? Don't need. I started with a D40, and then got a great deal on a D80. About six months later I found a deal on a D300 that was very good. I then gave the D40 with my 18-55 and 55-200 to my father. Then a friend got me a D5000 that "fell of a truck" for $200 -- who could pass that up. Then I found a D90 with only 22 clicks for $450 from a pro that did not like it. So, I sold my D80 for about $525. That is how I ended up with three.
I like all three. I use them for different things. The D5000 is great to just carry around as it is so light. When I go out shooting many times I will take two of them so that I don't have to change lenses.
