I use that plug-in as well on occasion. But rather than use the results directly, which looks too bizarre to me, I duplicate the background layer, apply the effect to the copy, then merge the results with the original to get a more subtle effect. In this case, I used the 'luminosity' mode and adjusted the opacity to around 50-60%.
