For this shot and all other self-portraits, I try to grab something that's tall (usually my wife) to place where I'll eventually stand. A wife is a good choice because she's mobile and you can see what position is best with a human subject.

Anyway, once I have my spot, I focus on whatever I've chosen as my placeholder. I then mark the place where that item/person was and then switch my camera to Manual Focus Mode (M) which will 'lock it in.' Then, regardless of what the lighting is like, as long as you stand on your mark, you'll be good to go...
