Bastian: Why is it so dark?
Empress Moonchild: In the beginning it is always dark.
Bastian: What is that?
Empress Moonchild: One grain of sand. It is all that remains of my vast empire.
The Neverending Story was one of my fave movies as a kid. Had such fun dressing up one of the little ones for this! Used a tripod, diffused natural light (not enough, though, it was a dreary day) and one of the tall halogen lamps in the living room for the hairlight. The background is a black fur coat (faux of course

) draped over two kitchen chairs. The glowing grain of sand is one bulb from a set of twinkle lights under the fabric. See the stream for a couple of other shots from the set.
