I sit firmly in the realistic HDR camp, I use HDR occasionally to bring out the detail in dark holes, but stay well away from tone mapping. That said, it's just reflective of my style of photography.

I think the "issue" with the original image is that it's not immediately evident if it's supposed to be a natural or obvious HDR image.
