In the tools menu go to ----transform tools----crop(looks like a knife)
Double click on the crop tool and the crop tool menu will come up in the toolbox
Click on the fixed box (this will fix the ratio that you choose)
Below the "fixed" box you will see a box with the ratio (2 numbers seperated by a colon)---just put the ratio you want in that box.....example for a 8 x 10 print you would put 4:5 in the box.
Toward the bottom of the menu, you will see a box that says "no guides". Click on the arrow at the right of the box and choose rule of thirds or golden sections. A grid will appear when you crop to help with composition.
To crop, just click on the photo and drag to the size you want. After you get the box the size you want, you can click and drag in the center to reposition the whole box.
When you get it to the crop you want, just double click in the center of the cropped portion and it will crop the photo.
If you mess up and want to start over, click on edit---undo crop. Sometimes it will look like it is still cropped (its not it is just zoomed in). Click on view---zoom---fit image in window and it will be back.
Start watching video's at meet the gimp and you will learn to crop and a whole lot more.
