Depending on your intentions, the D5000 might be a cheaper solution. My point is the D90 features will shine if you intend to use the manual modes (P A S M). For example, the D90 as 2 command dial but you will not really use them with the scenes mode (portrait, landscape, etc.). It also have an LCD on top to provide information. Again, if you use the scene modes, the camera choose these settings for you.

They are both very good cameras using the same sensor and same focus system.

Don't get me wrong though, I love my D90. If you are looking for a body to grow into and learn about photography, it will give you more options once you pass the basic knowledge.
