The 85 1.8 is a great portrait lens. enjoy it!

People who go to the D700 do one of two things: go whole-hog on professional zooms, or stick to smaller primes. Either way, you'll enjoy it.

Assuming you want zooms: the 24-70 f/2.8 or 28-70 f/2.8 are great options, as is the 24-85 f/2.8-3.5 macro. That gives you walkaround range. From there you can go wider (17-35 f/2.8 or 14-24 f/2.8) or telephoto (70-200 f/2.8 or 70-300 f/4.5-5.6).

Assuming you wanna go primes: 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, with the 85 and maybe the 135 f/2 DC or the 200 f/2 and you're covered. If you wanted wider I'd go to the 14-24, its simply that good.
