try shooting near an open window to get more light and you can also use a peice of white card to reflect some light back into the shadows. You could also use a peice of black plexiglas as the base instead of the wooden table. This would give you a cool reflection. The example below uses white plastic to give a reflection but you get the idea. It might add a bit more drama to the shot and lighten the scene
