Your own camera has a light meter built in, if doing portrait and studio photography where your controlling the lighting conditions then buying a meter may come in handy.
But if your using it for everyday use, use the built in camera meter the ones you buy are for measuring the light hitting a subject if you were going to use one for landscape work you would have to climb the mountain you were photographing to the spot you were focusing measure the light with the meter and climb back down again and take the shot.
