As for the original photo, I'd add that is seems like the focus is around the top-right of his forehead as opposed to his eyes. The edit that was made (not Ken's) helped with the overall sharpness, but might not have been needed if the focus was spot on. However, definitely not a horrible photo AT ALL. In my opinion, more natural and better than many senior portraits I've seen.
