I have heard about low light focusing issues also but I haven't had a lot of problem with mine, though that may be a matter of how or when I shoot. If I know I'm going into a low light situation, I often pull out a prime, usually my 50mm f/1.4. I've used the Tamron for portraits and it does a good job. As for weddings, that was the reason I bought the 17-55. I wanted a little wider end and the IS to give me a little extra help.
