Then forget an affordable IR remote, like the RC-1/RC-5. The XXD series (right now) doesn't use it. I'm hoping the 60D will, since this capability was added to the 5DMkII and the 7D (prior to that, only the XXXD series could use the cheap IR remotes).
If you do get an XXD camera and it doesn't have this capability, and you don't want to spend $300+ for the Canon wireless remote, a cable release, or a cheap eBay radio shutter trigger is the way to go. I've been looking at the Yong Nuo RF-602, since it does double duty as a remote shutter release and a cheap radio flash trigger, but Yong Nuo isn't exactly known for high build quality and great copy consistency.
The difference between the XXD and XXXD remotes, is that the XXXD remote's connector is a simple mini-audio plug (like the one your cellphone uses). The XXD series uses a Canon proprietary connector (N3) with three pins.
