Still so much to learn in post processing...I use photoimpact.
I used the lasso tool and selected the dark parts on the left pirates face. Then photo effects, color adjust, B&C4 x2.
Lasso tool on woman's face, photo effects, color adjust, B&C5. Lasso tool chose the white background, photo effect, lens filter, gradient filter 5. I cloned out the bar of shadow across all of the chests. I cloned and smudged the shadows on the woman's face to help even the tone. I believe that is what I would do.
