I've had my D40 for about 3 years; no special LCD cover and, so far, no problems. However, I do keep the camera in a camera bag when I'm not shooting with it and make sure there is nothing in there which will cause problems (spare lenses packed away in compartments) so I have taken a lot of care with it.
