Here's an example of the above, you'll have to excuse the image, it';s really not ideal for this example, but all I've got on my SD card at the moment.

So I applied filter - noise, set something like 50%-60% gaussian & monchrome. As you can see, it's WAY to much noise!
Then I hit ctrl+shift+f set the blend mode to soft light and the opacity to 80%. As you can see the effect is a lot more subtle and blends nicer than just applying a lower amount of noise in the first place.
