It's funny that you should mention CD drive speeds. Cause the same rating system is used for memory cards. Which is to say, 150 kBps = 1x.
So if you have a 40x memory card, your resulting burst speed is 6000 kBps which is the same as 6 megabytes per second. But memory cards will also have different read and write speeds. Usually, the read speed will be a bit higher than the write speed. The write speed is usually what is advertised.
