Yes, the D40 has a vivid setting. If you are shooting in RAW mode it won't matter because the color information that Nikon uses to create vivid mode is in the RAW photograph. Shoot RAW and edit in UFRAW program and output to Gimp or get Photoshop and the Nikon RAW plugin. But if you dont' do all the techie stuff then by all means shoot in vivid mode.
When you post your picture. Make sure you put the EXIF information up as well. Then we can see the camera settings.
