To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why, given that point and shoot cameras give a live view on the screen. However, it is a common (universal) fact that one of the benefits of stepping up to a DSLR is almost instantaneous response.
Meanwhile, make the most of static subjects and try to anticipate the action (even if you end up with lots of shots to scrap where nothing interesting ended up happening).
