I meant that the photo itself can be used to create a layer mask.

To do it, duplicate the layer and desaturate. Then adjust the levels to create as much contrast beween the sky and the rest of the picture as you can. Then you can use a soft edged brush in overlay mode to create a layer which you can use as a mask to mask out the sky in order to put another sky in.

The technique is most valuable in creating a mask for hair, but it is good for other situations where you want to make a complex mask quickly. It does need a lot of contrast though.
