Au contraire, like a lot of the earlier Powershot cameras, the S3IS can take an accessory tube that will let you attach 58mm filters (and teleconverter-like accessories) in front of the lens. The G series also does this, and a couple of the older A series models (like the A650IS), too, iirc. If the Powershot has a button on the front to release an accessory ring around the lens (it's kind of like an SLR's lens release button), it can do this.

I'd actually recommend a lensmate tube over the Canon one--lensmate makes its rings out of aluminum rather than plastic, and if you want plastic, there are cheaper versions out there.
