Default Assignment: B&W Portrait

I took this photo yesterday at the annual West University Children's Parade. Attached is a thumbnail of the original. I edited it in Photoshop and struggled with removing some of the distracting background (cause I don't know how to use photoshop - really need to set aside some time and learn the program). I know that most everyone could have done a better job with working with the background and lighting, and if you don't have anything better to do, I'd love to see some examples of how a better job could have been done with the background.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II
7/4/09 - 9:58AM
1/250 sec
F-Stop: f/5.6
Aperature f:/4.0
ISO: 640
Focal Length: 105mm
Lens: EF24-105MM
Flash: Did not Fire

Thanks, and I really enjoy looking at everyone's photos!
