Because the assignments (and thus contests) are about pushing and developing people's skills. Most of the time we do aim to be inclusive but, in order to present a broad curriculum, we will sometimes draw on subjects that require specific capabilities

If you really have a passion to try and come up with a winning shot (for all that is worth) then you can probably find the money to get a second-hand, entry level DSLR; if you just want to participate, we've already made provision for that with the parallel theme.

Compared to most photographic contests, I think we provide a very low bar for entry!
