The reason that longer focal lengths make for better bokeh is because while the detail in the background is blurred by the same amount, the background appears to be closer and therefore larger. A large blurry image will look blurrier than the same image at a small size - that's why everything looks in focus on the LCD screen. By bringing the background closer with the longer lens, you're increasing the apparent size of the blur, making it more noticeable.
