Always use your lens hood. The lens was designed to use it and will yield better images when it's installed. The only time you should not use the hood is when using a filter that won't allow the hood to be attached at the same time.
While in many shots the difference with or without a hood will be minor, it will prevent many little anomalies from spoiling an otherwise beautiful shot. It can even affect the sharpness.
If you can, return to the spot and try the same shot with your hood installed and see if the problem goes away. If not, try a smaller aperture...say around f/8 or so.
