Is the person you are focusing on, in focus? If so, then your depth of field it too shallow. This is controlled by the apeture. The larger the number, the greater focus area you will have, but at the cost of shutter speed. Don't go to large that causes too slow of shutter speed, or you will then be dealing with blur from camera shake and subject movement.
