I think the branches serve two purposes.
They provide contrast between nature and man made structures and it gives the viewer a sense that the photographer was in the woods peering towards the city. Perhaps as a wild animals view from their peaceful woodland home wondering how long will it be until man begins to take their land away for urban sprawl.
