Another method you could try (employed by some astrophotographers) is to tape a couple of pieces of fishing line, in an X shape over the lens. You'd only get four spikes coming off the sun instead of the several here but it's also possible it could mean a shorter exposure time to get a similar effect. I'm still pretty new to photography so my information could be a little off.
