1st I added a levels adjustment layer to try to make the coloring less dull and more dynamic. 2nd I added a 50% gray layer set to Overlay. Then with black and white as color selection for brush I dodged and burned trying to get rid of blown out areas of pic. Eventually I set the opacity of the layer to 87%. That didn't work enough to my liking, so then I added another layer to try to bring in some color to the face and shirt that I felt was missing. I added some skin tone colors; light pinks and orange to his face and gave the shirt a light yellow flavoring. I eventually set this layer to multiply with an opacity of 75%.
Still not satisfied, I duplicated the original layer and set it to Multiply at 100% opacity. The 5 layers from the bottom up are original back, face and shirt color layer, dodge and burn layer, duplicate background and then level adjustment layer. I didn't crop it, but probably would have. My overall goal, was to change the picture just enough so that if printed the face would not look blown out and to make the background pop a bit more than the original.
I did think about getting a pic of Suge Knight and make the pic look like Suge was holding him upside down from a balcony ala Vanilla Ice, but Suge Knight held me upside down from a balcony until I changed my mind about doing that.
There's still some blown out areas, but I couldn't figure how to get rid of those without making the guy look like some kubuki theater star.
