These settings could be a good place to start, but a lot will depend on your lighting conditions. Also, if you are photographing a group of people, you might want to start with at least f5.6 and probably f8. With f4 you might get some people out of focus.

Also, depending on the lighting ISO 800 might be too high and create a lot of noise. What kind of camera do you have? I know you said Canon - but some deal with noise better than others. If you don't need 800 ISO, you could start with 400 and see the results.
