Depends on who you ask.
Personally, I think it's too close to call. I've actually seen one side-by-side where someone resized both the 40D and the 50D images to try and get parity: they grew the 40D image and shrank the 50D image so they met at a halfway point. To my eye, the 40D looked worse, but I was probably fixated on resolution not noise performance; I've always been a resolution-junkie and not much of a noise-worrier (I shot
film, remember--there wasn't much you could do about grain, and iso was fixed to the roll.)
