I don't think this is the case and a separate area may just serve to create or reinforce this perception. There are multiple examples of threads stating how its not the camera, its the photographer and ideas for how to work with a P&Ss limitations. I'm also sure most people don't judge a photo by the camera but by the photo.
DSLRs have some big drawbacks as well. You can't get them in your pocket. They are very expensive. You need dedicated lenses for different types of photography. They don't produce pictures with as much pop straight out of the camera meaning you need to spend time in PS.
Maybe people should just be discouraged from putting their gear in their signature.
