I'm still new with this camera mularkey but I think (and I may be wrong) that a 50mm is a fixed lens - so you can't zoom in and out - you'll have to physically move to make sure you get the focus right!
The important thing is the f/1.8 ... this is a much bigger aperture than we tend to get on kit zoom lenses - means you can do a great deal more with it!

And now, one of the more experienced photographers will tell you properly!
