I use a 400mm prime (1270g) on my Canon XT (485g). The lens seriously outweighs my camera body. It's no problem--I just support the weight of the lens in my left hand and let the camera body come along for the ride. If I'm using a tripod/monopod, I use a tripod ring connected to the lens, not the camera tripod mount.
