I did think about resolution but decided not to ponder on it yesterday due to time constraints.
You can cut out a lot of the maths by ignoring the macro ratio. If I shoot something that is 10mm wide that can be made to fill about 1/4 of the horizontal frame, based on the measurement shots I did of my ruler. Given that figure, I can estimate how many pixels it will take up - at my present standard setting of 2256x1496 (D40 - medium size) the object will occupy about 560px across the screen (1/4 of 2256).
That is going to look nice and large on my present screen resolution (1024x768) although not quite so impressively big were I running at, say, 1600x1200.
If I switched to large pictures (about 3000px wide) the object would come out at about 750px wide in the final image. The sensor might make some difference but, as long as I got the focus right, the chances are the picture is still going to make me go wow!...
