Simple way: Ask yourself 3 questions:

1. What is my main subject?

3. What can I leave out of the image?

off the cuff, these are very good rules to live by. for me as a novice, 1 is pretty straight forward - it's the thing that caught my eye, made me pick up the camera, 2 is where some of the techniques or rules would really be handy to keep in the back of my head and 3 is probably the most forgotten step of all but as important as 1.

I do whole heartedly agree with your first point, just shoot the pictures. review and reshoot if possible. it's the only way to learn and grow.
