Default Interior photography

Working in the entertainment industry and owning a fairly decent camera means I get asked to take photos of events and entertainment occasionally.

I've been asked to take photographs, as a favour to a friend, of an event happening in the Royal Horticultural Halls in Central London. Being such a historical building I thought I'd ask other people what their techniques and tips are for shooting wide scenes inside buildings?

Is there a particular focal length I should be looking at using? Or should I just play it by eye? I'd be interested in people's responses

Thanks,

David
