The first time I put my XSi on full auto and the flash popped up and fired I looked at the resulting picture and it looked like I was shooting in front of some sort of airport runway lighting. I changed the flash compensation to -0.5 or -1 and shot again and got much better results...i.e. not absurdly bright. My flash now stays at -0.5 or -1 and if I need more light I'll just turn it up to 0 or more.
