I shoot mostly wildlife, birds particularly, so my tips might not be general purpose.
1. Shoot with AV setting, widest aperture, fastest shutter speed. Not only will it freeze movement best, but it will produce the narrowest depth of field to highlight the subject.
2. Set the camera on center spot focus. Often times this will allow you to pick out that little bird, buried in the branches and foliage. Make sure to change it back though when you're shooting flying birds, it's tough to focus with the center spot on a moving bird against the sky.
3. For birds on the ground, get down on your belly, or at least your knees, the perspective is much more interesting. BTW, that's a good tip with little kids also.
