This is my first try at one of these, it's fun! I made a duplicate layer with a blurred spotlight layer mask, adjusted curves. Then I selected the background color that was too close to the color of his face and desaturated with a 50% transparent layer. Then made another duplicate layer in overlay mode, adjusted curves, and gaussian blurred.
