I'd say the lens depends on the distance you have. As with nic's shots she was a distance away so it could have gone either way. For my shots this last weekend I used the full range on my 28-135mm between zooming in to catch the small explosions and other lighting effects, to zooming out (and needing more at times) to get the bigger bursts.
As you can tell, I also didn't crop my images. So while I could have just stayed zoomed out a bit the whole time I think I would have missed a few things even if I did crop down.
Lens speed didn't matter so much for me as I was using bulb mode the whole time so it was just a shutter release.
