if it is the cheap 10 -20 dollar set off ebay then go for it.....nothing more than some plastic tubes but really work well...I have a few in a set on my flickr page used with a 50mm f1.8 and i think its well worth the price although in darker conditions you'll need a flash. I use the sb-600 and works great. I bought them with the same reasoning you have....not sure I need to spend that much on a macro lens when i really dont do a whole heck of alot.....
