Add this to the long list of "Reasons not to use the pop-up flash", right behind "washed out foreground," "underexposed background" and "incredibly harsh shadows."
The pop-up flash is essentially useless for anything but fill flash in bright sunlight. Get yourself a real flash unit if you want to do the strobe-thing (which is great).
