I find it quite a pain when you see the perfect "kodak moment" but you're struggling to get the cap off, specially if you also have a hood. I bought one of those super spensy high end canon lenses that comes with the suede lens bag, it has a firm round bottom end so I just throw the bag on the lens without the cap so when I'm out and about I can just slip the cam out and shoot. (probably not the best practice, I totally don't recommend it to anyone) but it works for me and will definetely work when I get a filter/protector.
