I don't think a degree is necessary at all. You may need training to increase your proficiency. I think the most important thing you can do is decide what type of photography you want to break into and the start shooting. Build yourself a portfolio and get it in front of people. I've never taken photo's for profit but recently I've been getting some requests from people who have seen my work.
