a friend of mine did this once and they were actually using lit cigarettes for steam - in a photo, not a lot of people can really tell the difference. i'm sure we've heard similar stories before - cold ice beer? rub the bottle with oil and spray some water. ice cream? make-uped styro (i'm not kidding on this), and there's even a thread here in dps about make-shift home-made studios for small objects (heck, i even used my clothes hamper to give an unusual shadow to the mobile phone i was capturing)... and the list goes on.
i guess it depends on what kind of steamy food you intend to capture.
