What you want is a a relatively shallow depth of field, which can be achieved with a wide aperture (lower F/ number). You can experiment on full manual mode, which is fun, or you can go for Aperture priority mode (Av on the dial). Also experiment with different focal lengths - getting close to your subject and using wide angle, or backing away and using some zoom.
